Prioritize Apple Watch Data for Sleep
complete

Matthias
I usually have to data sources in my sleep data:
- from my iPhone (based on the set focus)
- from my Apple Watch (based on my movements)
The time in bed seams to be correctly calculated from the Apple Watch source, the shown time duration (e.g. 23:44 - 07:01) uses all available data sources. Also the time to fall asleep is calculated based on all data sources.
Does numbers should only be based on the Apple Watch data, if this data source is available. Only if it’s not available, it should consider the iPhone as data source.

I just saw there is already a setting to select data sources. The order set up there should also skip less prioritized data sources, if the high one is available.

Matthias: Hi Matthias, Could you please send a screenshot of your Sleep Data Sources?
Do you have your Apple Watch set as the top priority source? If not, you can tap Edit and put it as your top priority source.
I just wanted to make sure that this is your setup (which should be the default setting for Sleep Data source if you are only using an Apple Watch to track your Sleep)
This way, your Apple Watch sleep data will be prioritized if available, and less prioritized data (such as Phone/Time in bed) will only be shown if the Apple Watch sleep data is not yet present or hasn't been reflected in your Apple Health app when you wake up from your Sleep Schedule.

Randell, I attached four screenshots.
You can see here, that the Time in Bed is taken from the Apple Watch, which is fine.
Only the sleep duration and the time to sleep is calculated based on all data sources, what is not correct for me.

Matthias: Hey Matthias, I'm jumping in for Randell here. Thanks for the bug report. This is a bug that we're fixing and will push out a fix asap.

Grey I like to add to the conversation: Apple Watch’s time in bed certainly isn’t right either. That’s always just a few minutes more than time asleep. It certainly is not the actual time in bed. I think it would really be hard for Bevel to correctly get this metric automatically. I don’t think the solution is to prioritize the Watch’s data over the iPhone’s data. I would vote against that solution. Users will just have to modify it by hand in the health data. Which isn’t that hard. Maybe the new algorithm of iOS 18/watchOS 11 will solve it. It is supposed to be a lot better at this.
Plus, users like Matthias can already just disable the iPhone usage in sleep data altogether. iPhone : “health->sleep->full schedule & options -> track time in Bed with iPhone”

Peter You may be right, but we should at least display consistent information. Not just for sleep, but for the entire app. And as I understood it, the statement for the data sources in general was that the order determines the priority. So it's just not working as expected at the moment
Grey
Matthias: That's correct. There is a bug with the information display.
Peter, you are also correct. We are pushing out a new feature in the next month to improve in-bed time calculations.

Grey That’s great! I’m happy 👍

Grey Please consider the fact (in the next release) that people like me modify the bed time manually after waking up. That’s often after Bevel has already pulled its data in from Apple Health. At the moment, Bevel doesn’t pull the data in again after a refresh. Apple health does do that. And it reflects the actual time in bed after modifying it.
Context: Sometimes I throw away time in bed from Apple Watch and iPhone and add a new entry. And sometimes I’ll modify the existing data.
@Matthias: the time in bed from the iPhone is not just determined by the focus. It is also determined by movement and usage.

I’ve downloaded the latest version that supposedly had the fix, but now it is way worse. The time asleep is every day the same as time in bed and sleep-fase data is missing. (P.S. I sent screenshots)

Peter: I responded to your email. Let me know if you have follow up questions.
