Watch App Crashes and 'un-sync's' Custom Exercises

Splitting out from my previous 'Apple Watch App Crashes' case which proved to be related to connecting an external Heart Rate Monitor like Polar H10- to Watch Bluetooth - Issue 'workaround' but not resolved but connecting H10 to iPhone Bluetooth during workouts
During the above case investigation I also highlighted that my Watch App would Crash if the Strength Training workout had 'Custom Exercises' in it as well as after the initial Sync it would then 'un-sync the custom exercises
After running the App for a week without a single crash, after connecting my Polar H10 to my iPhone instead of the Watch, Today was the first day I tried to run a saved workout with 'Custom Exercises', after 20 seconds the App crashed and then when I restarted I only had 5 exercises show instead of of the 8, which were still showing in the Phone App

Hi, just moved over from Whoop a week ago and so far loving Bevel BUT so far the Watch App has just ended a few minutes into Strength Training, 3 times on one day and a few other times during week… this is also creating multiple workouts in Fitness and messing with my overall tracking… this one thing may result in switching Whoop back on unfortunately:-(
Is this already logged as a bug and in progress at all?
Cheers, Lee

I am experiencing similar issues with an original Apple Watch Ultra (26.0.2) and an iPhone 15 pro max (26.0). Connected to data and WiFi during workouts
Similar to OP, the strength trainer works great when it works. But was sporadically loosing connection and then causing my whole watch to crash and restart. I did see an error screen on phone one time.
Error in screenshot. You can also see in screenshot, I also have a separate myzone sensor (HR tracker)connected to my iPhone, Bluetooth earphones, whoop and watch. Perhaps this is overwhelming the chip? Typically the watch crash happens between sets. Curiously, once the watch restarts my Bluetooth earphones will also disconnect from my phone every time which is a bit odd and makes me think it’s Bluetooth related.
Have sent logs

Andrew Carfax-Foster: Hi Andrew, thanks for sharing this info.
Have you tried recording your workout without opening the separate tracking app you mentioned? See if are able to fully log/track your workout without any issues?
Andrew Carfax-Foster
Hey Randell,
I tried tracking a full workout yesterday without the Myzone sensor connected. And the bevel iphone+watch app tracking was rock solid.

Hi Amanda - Was going SO well, over a week without a crash and then 2 crashes today, July 4th @ 14.17 during warmup again, but an usual crash an hour in at 15.03, it never usually crashes that far into a workout.... watch logs uploaded
Amanda
Lee Shelford: Thanks for the update Lee. We've made some performance improvements, but I'm sorry to hear that it is still crashing. Were you able to determine if custom exercises played a part?
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda - I dont think its related to Custom Exercises, however most of my workouts have at least 1 custom exercise in them so its hard to rule out... it just crashed again, just a few minutes into warmup, so not even on first exercise.... not sure if its relevant but watch screen went completely back for a few seconds before going to usual Apple Watch face - Timestamp July 7th 13.23

Hi Amanda - Most recent Crash Today - Timestamp 14.17 on June 24th - Crashed again just a few minutes in during warmup time, before starting first set - Watch Logs Uploaded

Hi Amanda - Back after a month of 50Th BDay celebrations (i.e. slight break from gym other than maintenance) - Ive been back into full 60-90 min workouts for over a week and the updates have helped MASSIVELY... But i am still getting the very occational app crash, again usually within first minute or two of opening app and starting warmup, i.e. timer is going but havent started my first set yet as warming up on cross trainer... ive just uploaded logs, it has occurred every workout for past 3 days, you will see first workout is just a minute or two, which is where the crash occurs

Hi again Lee Shelford, we're looking into this as well! Earlier you had tried removing special characters from the titles, did this work?
Amanda
Can you also submit your logs again please?
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda There are no special characters in my Custom Exercise names… only the Workout Name and after I had a week of no crashes with the Polar H10 connected to my iPhone I changed the remainder of my Workout Names back to having _ between the words, and still no crashes due to special character use in workout names…

Amanda just sent, last ‘unsync’ and crash due to custom exercise use was Wednesday @ 13.24
Amanda
Lee Shelford: Just to confirm, this is only occurring in workouts with custom exercises, and before you have pressed play on any of the exercises?
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda yes correct Amanda, I went a whole week without a crash and the moment I opened a workout with a Custom Exercise it crashed, whilst I was in the warm up, I hadn’t even started the first custom exercise… then when I restarted the app only the 5 ‘standard’ exercises were left synced on the watch… whilst all 8 exercises were still on the phone as per the photos
Amanda
Lee Shelford: Hi Lee, apologies for the delay. We haven't forgotten about this and are taking a deeper look into this issue. Stay tuned!
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda Okay thanks for the update
Amanda
Lee Shelford: Hi Lee, can you please update to the latest version in the app store and see if this issue remains? We pushed a small fix.
Amanda
Hi Lee Shelford, we are trying to reproduce this on our end. Can you please let us know:
- If there is anything that triggers the crash (e.g. clicking pause) or if it is running in the background
- Watch model & OS version
- Do you have internet while you are working out?
- Screenshots of multiple workouts in Fitness
This will allow us to better understand what is happening on your end. Thanks!

Amanda Hi, please see attachments... happening nearly on a daily basis unfortunately so easy to replicate... seems to only happy during my warm up after starting the Strength Tracker app and selecting my plan... happening a few minutes in and always within the first 10 minutes, if i get past 10 mins it works perfectly for the rest of my workout 60-90 mins
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda 1. If there is anything that triggers the crash (e.g. clicking pause) or if it is running in the background - Crash happens with App on display on Watch, usually after a few minutes of starting the program and whist i am still in my warmup phase (10mins) on the X-Trainer, so before i start my first set... seems that as long as i get back 10 mins or into my first set it doesnt occur 2.
Watch model & OS version - Apple Watch Ultra (original) - 11.3.1 (22S560)
- Do you have internet while you are working out? - Yes, always connected to internet over Wifi whilst working out, have own gym at home
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda Not sure if its a consideration, but i have a Polar H10 Heart Rate Chest Strap connected via Bluetooth to the Watch Ultra during my Strength Training for more accurate HR data

Amanda Hello again, sorry for the Spam, just went to to start my daily gym routine, started the App, and it crashed just a few seconds in, timestamp 13.31 local time.... i went straight back in and sent logs.... apple ID same as my email
Amanda
Lee Shelford: Thank you, the more information we have the better to figure this out! We were unable to reproduce this on our end but the devs are looking into the logs. Stay tuned.
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda okay thanks… at this stage then if it’s looking reasonably specific to my watch, is it now worth trying to uninstall the watch app, watch reboot, reinstall, etc.?
Amanda
Lee Shelford: That's a good idea as we work through your logs. Let me know if it works!
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda Also, my free trial expires today… is there possibility you can extend until we resolve this at all? I’m a little hesitant in committing the $80 while the watch app is crashing daily on me… but still keen to work with Bevel to troubleshoot and resolve and sign up once it’s loading without issue for a 3-4 days without issue, thanks, Lee
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda throwing the below error, I’ll try again once my current trial I expired, I have cancelled it but looks like it will stay active for the final day of the trial today still

Amanda - managed to introduce another issue by reinstalling the watch App… only 3 of my 11 workouts have resynced from the phone app to the watch… struggled for an hour to force a sync without joy, so ended up just doing cardio today… hoping it syncs the rest of my workouts overnight as it took me hours to input them into the phone app, hoping to not have to delete them and start again :-(
Randell
Lee Shelford: Hi Lee, for this, can you try going to Bevel -> Fitness -> Strength -> Tap the 3 dot icon -> Tap “Sync to watch”. See if this will work, it does take some time for the Phone app and Bevel app to sync again after reinstalling.
L
Lee Shelford
Randell well that’s a very handy button I wish knew existed before today ;-) All sync’ed now thank you… I’ll try and re-replicate crashing issue again tomorrow now it’s been re-installed and update with findings, cheers
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda sorry team, it’s actually worse now I reinstalled the watch app… I can’t even get more than 10 mins into a workout now… even crashing whilst onto my sets…. :-[
L
Lee Shelford
Even custom exercises keep disappearing… even after a sync to phone… see 8 exercises on phone and there was 8 on watch when I started which then disappeared and left with 5 exercises
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda Randell - I think I have discovered the specifics to this issue - can you please try and add a few custom exercises in with some standard ones when you replicate… it seems the custom ones do sync then cause the crash, then de-sync leaving just the standard exercises - Hope this additional info helps
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda - Any joy replicating the crash issue with some custom exercises at all? Thanks, Lee
Amanda
Lee Shelford: Hi Lee, apologies for the delay and thank you for the additional information. We are actively trying to reproduce this on our end but no luck yet. We will get back to you as soon as we have an update.
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda Hi, thanks fro the update, i tried a few more things today to try and rule them out... removed special characters from Strength Exercise names, i had <ProgramName>_Week1_Day1.... now renamed and removed _, i also connected external Polar HRM to iPhone bluetooth rather than watch and didnt include an Custom Exercises.... it started off really posative and did over 50 mins without a crash, then it crashed unfortunately..... BUT same thing as before, when i restarted Watch App, the exact same program which had 8 exercises now only had 5 shown.... so it is not related to Customer Exercises... hope this additional info helps somewhat
L
Lee Shelford
Amanda - I THINK I HAVE ISOLATED THE ISSUE - I am now 3 days without a crash… seems the external Heart Rate Monitor was causing the instability and watch app crashes… I have been connecting my Polar H10 to my iPhone instead of my Watch and it is now allowing me to complete full 60-90 minute weight training sessions with out fail… I see there are a few requests for better external HRM support, hopefully this now warrants some further investigation - can I ask a questions please? Does Bevel use the Heart Rate data from Apple Health or the Apple Watch for analysis of a Strength Training session? I.e. now I am having to connect my Polar H10 to the phone am I back to using the less accurate Watch Heartrate? Cheers, Lee
Amanda
Lee Shelford: Hi Lee, thank you so much for the additional info! We are testing this our end with the Polar H10. Suspect it may be related to performance since the HRM has a much higher sampling rate. Bevel will use the HR data that was intentionally recorded during your workout. To check this, you can go to Apple Health -> HR -> any datapoints -> you should see "heart rate context = workout". Stay tuned, we're working on it!
Amanda
Hi Lee Shelford, just wanted to follow up on this. If you go into Apple Health -> Workouts -> Show All Data -> click a workout where you used Polar, -> Average Heart Rate -> You should see Polar & Apple watch readings, which is what Bevel reads into the app. Let me know if you don't see this..
Polar writes the same amount of HR data (60 samples/second) whether you connect it to the Apple Watch or iPhone bluetooth. The only difference is with the Watch sampling rate & the live view on Strength Builder:
- If Polar is connected to the Watch, you will see Polar HR values in Strength Builder live, and Apple Watch will only read 1 sample/2mins.
- If Polar is connected to the iPhone, you will see Apple Watch's HR values in Strength Builder live, which are measured at ~10samples/min.
You can also set a priority for overall Heart Rate measurements if there are multiple sources at once in Apple Health -> Heart Rate -> Data Sources & Access -> Edit -> Move Polar to the top of the list.
Hopefully this helps!
Randell
Hi Lee Shelford, No, we haven’t received any similar reports regarding this issue yet. Can you please go to Bevel watch app -> Gear Icon -> tap “send logs”
Once done, email us at hello@bevel.health the email/apple ID that you have used to log in to Bevel?
