Strength Trainer automatically quitting workouts

Loving strength trainer, the implementation is beautiful. Although, yesterday I ended up with 3 different strength trainer workouts because it kept automatically stopping the workout. I'm not sure why. I restarted both the phone and the watch. Eventually I gave up trying to log everything. :/
Is this on your radar?

complete
Quinn Comendant
Grey, you just marked this complete; did you fix anything since August 23? Because, that's the last time I experienced this issue. It's been happening to me a couple times a month.
Most often, the app crashes before any data is logged, resulting in an “empty” workout session, and displays summary screens like ones attached below.
One clue: when the app crashes in this way, there seem to be two rest timers running:
- Rest timer haptics every 2 mins coinciding with the rest clock in multiples of 2 minutes (02:00,04:00, etc). 👍
- Rest timer haptics every 2 mins NOT coinciding with the clock, i.e., haptic might occur at 00:15.
Do you run the rest timer on its own thread? Is it possible when the AW app crashes, that the first rest timer could continue running in the background (because it wasn't a “clean shutdown”), and when I restart the workout there are two rest timer threads running?
---
There's a couple related issues you can probably merge into this one:
- Strength trainer just stopped and vanished (this one has some of my earlier reports on the issue).
- Apple Watch workout crashes/ends early

Quinn Comendant: Are you still experiencing this issue on the new Apple Watch app?
I marked it as complete because we did some refactoring that should fix it in theory (and at least when we tried to, we couldn't reproduce it).
However, if you're still experiencing this issue, we'll need to reopen it. If there are any additional details you can share on how to reproduce it, that'd be really helpful! 🙏

Grey The last time I had this issue was on Aug 23. If you did refactoring since then, I hope it's fixed and I'll report back in a month or so. These intermittent issues are hard to nail down. 😅
Oh, there is something else I should mention: sometimes the timer doesn't start when starting a workout. Here's the steps that trigger this:
- AW 8 with always-on display disabled (not sure if that's a prerequisite, but you'll see why it might be related below).
- Start a workout.
- Immediately, I put my wrist down and the watch face turns dark.
- I do my gym warmup routine.
- About 15 minutes later, I'll raise my wrist to glance at my watch and Bevel will show the timer starting from 00:00:01.
It seems dropping my wrist immediately causes the app to go in the background and the timer doesn't start until the next time the app is in the foreground.
This may be related to the issue of workouts terminating early, because both seem to occur at the start (prematurely-ended workouts usually have a duration of 0 seconds).

Quinn Comendant: Ok got it. That's very helpful information to know.
We'll investigate further on our end. I'll open this ticket again. Let me know if you can reproduce the quitting workout early issue.
Quinn Comendant
Grey Unfortunately, it happened again yesterday: after doing my workout warmup, I checked my wrist and Bevel was not running. I open Bevel, and there is the workout summary screen displaying a workout of 0 seconds.
I feel pretty confident the issue can be triggered consistently by following the steps in my previous comment. Putting the wrist down, and not glancing at the watch for the next 10+ minutes seems key here.

It didn’t happen to me the last couple of days but it just happened to me twice on back to back sets to start the workout
Grey
Kenny: Do you know if the watch app was in background or foreground when that happened?
Kenny
Grey it was in the foreground both times. I started the set on the watch, and then after my set I went to pause it to input it and my watch was on the clock face and re-opening Superset on the watch opened it to the main screen.
Grey
Kenny: Got it. Thanks for the details. I will look into this further
Kenny
Grey thank you for looking into this so fast!

I have the same issue. After 2 or 3 minutes the workout on my Apple Watch stopped. I’m using the latest build 1.1.3 (725).

After restarting both - watch and phone, the strength builder works perfectly. No automatically stopping anymore.
Edit: Tried again with another workout and the same issue happened. The workout stopped automatically.
Btw I’m using an iPhone 13 Pro Max and an Apple Watch Ultra 2 - both with the latest OS.

Clearing cache as well as deleting the app and reinstalling also hasn’t worked.

This morning I started another workout via Strength Builder and it worked perfectly. I have no idea what the problem was the last time.

Christian: Thanks for reporting Christian. I am still tracking this issue down. Let me know if you can find a way to reproduce this issue on your end.
